Chappell Roan isn’t afraid of anything it comes to beauty, including the phrase that could stop even the most experimental of makeup lovers in their tracks: pencil-thin brows.
Pop’s most recently-crowned queen floated down the Grammys red carpet in a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier gown both inspired by and imprinted with Degas’s painted dancers. She paired the Moulin Rouge-ready look with her signature drag- and clown-inspired makeup, complete with a full face of chalk white foundation, blue and yellow eyeshadow, and burgundy lipstick that matched her red curls perfectly. Sitting in the middle of all that drama was a hand-drawn brow line that could have crawled off Betty Boop herself.
Roan has bleached her brows and shaved them off completely, so it was perhaps only a matter of time until she walked the red carpet in a barely-there brow look. (The glueing down of her natural brows will, however, make it harder to read her expressions when she wins or loses the six awards she’s nominated for tonight.)
This being Roan, the look had multiple jaw-dropping beauty moments, including a blue and gold pearl-encrusted French manicure with long coffin nails that match her elbow-length blue gloves.
Oh, and did we mention she’s wearing a headpiece? It’s the same one that came down the Gaultier runway in 2003. The original model walked with a spidery cat-eye that would have been considered bold. Roan would likely have been in Kindergarten then, biding her time until she could teach us all a lesson about what experimental makeup really looks like.
