With very few exceptions, Kylie Jenner‘s hairstyles for major red-carpet-worthy events over the last year have followed a pretty standard formula: long, loose, deeply side-parted bombshell waves à la ‘90s supermodels. Even when she wore an updo to the Met Gala, it felt like an extension of the soft, classic style she’s been wearing between bold hair-color switch-ups. But her latest updo couldn’t be more of a departure from her go-to timeless glam.
Jenner attended the CFDA Awards in New York City on Monday night, and her look is proof that the Council of Fashion Designers of America can really inspire celebrity beauty and styling teams to get creative and deviate from their clients’ norms. She wore a feathery, black Jean Paul Gaultier gown that could only be described as pointy, and it appears to have influenced hairstylist Jesus Guerrero to craft an equally sharp updo.
From the front, the style is simultaneously stunning and mindboggling, almost giving an optical illusion effect. The base is super smooth, but not terribly severe, and Jenner’s pin-straight hair appears to be seamlessly draped on top, landing in an almost bob-like look.
